Protecting Riau’s Forests,
Empowering Its Communities
We work alongside local and Indigenous communities to protect forests, restore ecosystems,
and build sustainable livelihoods across Riau, Indonesia.

WHO WE ARE
Local Knowledge. Stronger Communities. Resilient Forests.
Hutanriau Foundation is a Riau-based non-profit organisation working with Indigenous peoples and local communities to strengthen land governance, restore forests and ecosystems, and support sustainable livelihoods.
We combine participatory mapping, field research, community facilitation, institutional strengthening, and practical conservation action to develop solutions grounded in local realities.
Connecting People, Knowledge, and Landscapes
Our programmes respond to the realities of forest-dependent communities while strengthening the ecological resilience of Riau’s landscapes.
Land Governance and Spatial Evidence
Participatory mapping, GIS, land-use planning, and spatial evidence that help communities and decision-makers govern landscapes more fairly.
Forest and Land Rehabilitation
Technical assistance, institutional strengthening, and field support that enable community groups to participate effectively in forest and land rehabilitation.
Ecosystem Restoration and Wildlife
Site-based restoration, enrichment planting, habitat improvement, and practical measures that strengthen ecosystems and support coexistence with wildlife.
Sustainable Livelihoods
Community enterprises, non-timber forest products, ecotourism, and practical skills that connect household resilience with responsible forest stewardship.
Local Knowledge and Research
Participatory research and documentation that bring local ecological knowledge, field evidence, and community experience into wider learning and decision-making.
Partnerships and Public Engagement
Collaborative environmental action with communities, government, civil society, universities, companies, volunteers, and the wider public.
