Why this work mattered
Tahura Sultan Syarif Hasyim contains degraded areas where restoration and habitat enrichment require long-term maintenance. The 2024 phase combined bamboo planting, maintenance of earlier planting areas, early survival monitoring, and enrichment of a forest-fruit collection block. The intervention was designed to contribute to habitat recovery and future elephant forage within a wider landscape approach.
What we set out to do
• Establish bamboo planting across 10 hectares in Tahura Sultan Syarif Hasyim.
• Maintain and replant earlier bamboo areas where required.
• Enrich a forest-fruit collection block with locally relevant species.

Results and learning
The initial census established a 76 per cent survival baseline for the 2024 bamboo planting. This is an early result rather than evidence of completed restoration. The work showed that planting requires reserve stock, maintenance, fertilisation, replanting, and repeated monitoring. Bamboo and forest-fruit planting were designed to support habitat enrichment and future elephant forage, but the available records do not demonstrate reduced human–elephant conflict or long-term ecological improvement.
Evidence notes
The 76 per cent figure is an early survival census and requires continued monitoring. The evidence verifies planting, maintenance, replanting, forest-fruit enrichment, and an initial survival count. It does not demonstrate that 24 hectares were fully restored, that habitat condition improved as a long-term outcome, that elephant forage use increased, or that human–elephant conflict declined.
