Habitat support needs planting, maintenance, and evidence over time

Tahura Sultan Syarif Hasyim is an important conservation area within a landscape where people and elephants share space. The project was designed to strengthen vegetation and future elephant forage as one contribution to wider human–elephant conflict mitigation efforts.

The work combined new bamboo planting with care for earlier planting areas, replanting, forest-fruit enrichment, and early survival monitoring. It also connected ecological activities with skills development for micro and small enterprises.

What we did

  • Planted 1,000 bamboo stems across 10 hectares, with 100 reserve stems.
  • Applied fertiliser and completed two maintenance rounds.
  • Maintained 12.4 hectares planted in 2023 and supplied 186 stems for replanting.
  • Added 150 forest-fruit plants to a one-hectare collection block.
  • Trained 14 micro and small enterprise participants in social media.

Early survival data provide a baseline, not a final impact claim

The initial census recorded 76 per cent bamboo survival. This provides a useful starting point for maintenance decisions and future monitoring, but it does not yet demonstrate long-term habitat change.

The project also showed the value of combining planting with maintenance, replacement stock, vegetation enrichment, and local capacity support. Continued monitoring is needed to understand survival, growth, use by wildlife, and any contribution to conflict mitigation.
