Clean Water for Lubuk Bigau and School Sanitation in Tanjung Sari
Clean-water infrastructure for 60 households in Lubuk Bigau and improved water and sanitation facilities serving 104 students and teachers at SMP Negeri Satu Atap Tanjung Sari.
Project overview
Project Overview
Hutanriau supported two practical water and sanitation interventions in Kampar Regency. In Lubuk Bigau, the project installed a community-scale intake, pipeline and storage system. In Tanjung Sari, it improved water storage, utilities and sanitation facilities at a rural junior secondary school.

Why this work mattered
Project Context
Access to basic water and sanitation infrastructure formed the practical focus of this 2023 project in two rural locations in Riau. In Lubuk Bigau, Kampar Kiri Hulu, the intervention addressed community access to clean water. In Tanjung Sari, Kuala Cenaku, the project addressed sanitation facilities at a public junior secondary school.
The Lubuk Bigau component required water infrastructure to be developed across forested and streamside terrain. Project documentation records work around the water source, construction of an upstream intake, mobilisation and joining of pipes, installation of the distribution line, construction of water-storage infrastructure and documented water flow through the system.
The second component supported sanitation improvements at SMP Negeri Satu Atap Tanjung Sari. Documentation records utility works, structural preparation, toilet finishing, sanitation infrastructure and the installation of elevated water tanks within the school compound.
Together, the two components illustrate Hutanriau’s experience in translating locally identified basic-service needs into practical field implementation while working across geographically distinct rural communities.
What we set out to do
Objectives
- Improve household access to clean water in Lubuk Bigau through community-scale water infrastructure.
- Improve water and sanitation facilities at SMP Negeri Satu Atap Tanjung Sari.
Delivery
What Hutanriau Did
- Facilitated discussions with community members in Lubuk Bigau on local water needs and implementation planning.
- Mobilised pipe and construction materials to support the clean-water system.
- Constructed an upstream water-intake structure at the source.
- Prepared, joined and installed sections of the water-distribution pipeline through forested and streamside terrain.
- Constructed water-storage infrastructure in Lubuk Bigau.
- Documented water flow through the completed distribution system.
- Undertook sanitation and utility works at SMP Negeri Satu Atap Tanjung Sari.
- Constructed support structures and installed elevated water tanks for the school sanitation facilities.
- Completed toilet, sanitation-chamber and associated finishing works within the school compound.
- Conducted field monitoring, implementation documentation and reporting.
What changed and what we learned
Results and Learning
The project delivered two complementary sets of basic infrastructure in different rural settings. In Lubuk Bigau, an intake, pipeline and storage system provided clean-water access for 60 households. At SMP Negeri Satu Atap Tanjung Sari, water storage, utilities and sanitation facilities served 104 students and teachers.
The Lubuk Bigau route had to follow forest streams and rocky source terrain, so construction and pipe installation were adapted to the site. Long-term value now depends on local management, maintenance, source protection and periodic checks on the condition of both systems.
