About Hutanriau Foundation
Hutanriau Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation based in Riau, Indonesia. We work with communities and partners to strengthen equitable land-use governance, restore ecosystems, reduce human–wildlife conflict risk, and support sustainable livelihoods through safeguards and evidence-based learning.

Who we are
We deliver community-led conservation through practical field programmes with clear safeguards, participatory engagement, and continuous learning. Our approach integrates local knowledge with science, and supports community institutions to make fair, resilient, implementable land-use decisions.

What we do
We deliver integrated programmes across five focus areas.
Ecosystem restoration
We support restoration planning, local nurseries, planting, maintenance, and survival checks to strengthen ecosystem resilience.
Participatory land governance and FPIC
We support inclusive land-use planning, strengthen local institutions, and reduce conflict through informed participation.
Human–wildlife conflict mitigation
We work with communities and partners to reduce risk and protect both people and wildlife.
Sustainable livelihoods and NTFPs
We support community enterprises, strengthen value chains, and connect groups to markets where relevant.
Evidence and learning for policy and delivery
We produce maps, field evidence, and learning products to improve programme design and partner accountability.
Where we work
We are based in Riau, Indonesia, with a primary landscape focus in Riau. We also support selected activities in West Sumatra when they align with our mission and community partnership model.
Potential future support may include post-disaster recovery collaboration in Palembayan, Agam, West Sumatra, subject to partnership and readiness.
